A temporary exhibit in the Michigan State University Museum features the American Robin (Turdus migratorius) specimens collected and studied by the late MSU ornithologist George J. Wallace to document the mortality of robins caused by DDT poisoning. Dr. Wallace’s findings were described by Rachel Carson in her landmark book, Silent Spring.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is currently comprised of four researchers and curators who have self-assembled to direct this project. As the RCN progresses more people will be added to this committee. The responsibilities of the Steering Committee include oversight of all aspects of the RCN. New members of the Steering Committee will be regularly elected from either workshops or the Core Participants (see below) .

Core Participants

The Core Participants is a broader group that comprises the Steering Committee (see above) and many people that were appointed externally as representatives of Partner Societies and Participating Groups . This diverse group represents many constituencies with stakes in Natural History Collections. The societies that have appointed Core Participants are primarily taxonomic base societies or societies dedicated to natural history collections. At the end of each year additional Core Participants will be chosen from open nominations. If you’re interested in joining, or wish to nominate someone else, please watch CollectionsWeb for details.

The primary responsibility of the Core Participants is to serve as a conduit between their societies and the RCN and to provide expertise on collections related issues in their field. They will also help set priorities of the RCN, elect new members of the Steering Committee, and approve new members of the Core Participants. Some Core Participants will be asked to participate in the RCN workshops.
